A Hommage to Lake Tahoe

(See in a browser for a better viewing experience)

Lake Tahoe is Americas’s second deepest lake and my safe haven for the past 28 years. I have loved Tragic Season (Fall before Winter arrives and Spring before the summer season hits), full-blown winters, 4th of July on the Lake and every moment in between. Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevada on the California side, Squaw Valley and Tahoe City became my homes away from home and nothing felt more familiar or safe to me for all those years. As I find myself on the other side of the globe in these early spring days, I feel the pull of the mountains and my lake. I truly hope I will see it again and/or discover my new Tahoe which I believe will be Höga Kusten. Until then, here are a few pictures from the past ten years in Tahoe:

For those of you who are not familiar with the various projects around this Lake, there are currently plans to build a gigantic hotel in Homewood on the West Shore which would make the 5 mile drive to Tahoe City 2 hours during 4th of July weekend, as well as a gigantic outdoor waterslide in Squaw Valley. As far as I am concerned, this would be a disaster for residents, tourists, critters and nature and I can only repeat over and over “KEEP TAHOE TRUE”!

Dispersion Effect

I discovered a fun little trick in Cyberlink’s PhotoDirector called dispersion effect – make sure you click HD in the lower right hand corner of the video screen for a better viewing pleasure!:

Winter Wonderland Again!

I have seen snow in Squaw Valley before, but never for a full week when even getting to the nearest restaurant was a struggle!  It has been snowing ever since and there will be lots of spring skiing this year!  My safe haven since 1993!

Winter Wonderland!

Squaw Valley is my safe haven where I have been staying for 26 years and never get tired of it!  Whereas summer is gorgeous in the Sierras, seeing the majestic mountains all draped in white adds extra magic!

Bordeaux Trip #4

Outside Bordeaux – The Hourtin Lake and the Atlantic Ocean

Only 1 hour from Bordeaux, or a straight shot to the West from Chateau Mouton Rothschild, you will find Hourtin with its lake and the beautiful Atlantic Coast.  Not as populated or affluent as Cap Ferret or Arcachon, it is a beautifully peaceful destination for getting out of the City of Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Trip #1

I just got back from 2 1/2 weeks in my beloved Bordeaux, a town that I have loved and considered home for over 30 years, even though I have been living in the US for two decades.  I will be sharing some of my photos over the next weeks and am starting today with the world that has been mine since 1984; Wine!

Fall has arrived in Napa!

It is impossible to get enough of these fall colors that currently grace Napa.  I found a little area in Carneros that seemed a little unkempt and it was not clear to me whether these grapes were still waiting to be harvested or if they had simply been left behind!  Whatever the case, I was grateful for their “plumminess” in the sun!

Last Days of Fall in Napa

The beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves are on their last legs, but I did manage to enjoy them one last time last week!  Here are some sunset photos from Screaming Eagle Winery on the Silverado Trail.  If you look closely, you will see a tiny rainbow in one of the photos!  There must have been humidity on top of the mountains.

Fall has arrived in Napa!

The colors are not quite as spectacular as they will be in a couple of weeks, but a few little pockets around Oakville are showing colors ranging from vibrant green to stunning orange and red.  Andretti Winery is one of the most photogenic wineries that I know of!  It is located on Big Ranch Road which runs parallel to the Silverado Trail.  It is open to the public and tastings are available.  Grab your cameras and have fun!

Sometimes, technical mistakes can produce rather amusing results!

This photo was taken on a cold winter day and I had put my neutral density filter between my teeth while I changed my lens.  It was getting dark, so it completely escaped me that the filter was now all fogged up!

I am not sure what happened with this one – probably a very dirty lens!

Odd Formats

Greenland seems to be made for Odd Format Pictures!  With gorgeous landscapes all over, the pictures are almost beginning for panoramic formats.  I had these pictures done in 20 x 10 prints and must say that they look completely at home like that!

Fall is Here!

Fall used to make me sad.  Being Scandinavian, I could not bear to lose the sunshine and the long days.  Now that I have lived in California for almost 20 years where the weather seems to get warmer every year, I treasure the cooler temperatures and the many photo ops!

I went to my beloved Lake Tahoe a couple of weeks ago where the colors where just beginning to turn.  How can these warm colors not put a smile on your face!?

And so it begins!

This marks the official start of the Nordic Diaries!  I have landed in Copenhagen after close to 24 hours of travels from San Francisco via my beloved France.  Such torture to only stay 3 hours!  Saturday morning, we start very early early in the morning when we fly to Iceland to spend 6 hours of sightseeing and then…… Greenland!

Get a Life!

Some people may find it slightly sad that my four-legged neighbors give me such joy!  Having lived most of my life in Cities, I am just enchanted with the nocturnal visits that I have every night around sunset.  For 11 years now, I have a new generation of raccoons arriving each summer with Momma Raccoon proudly showing off her babies and have lately also made friends with a family of skunks and possums.  The beauty of it all is that they all get along and that MeiMei the cat patiently waits for them every evening so that they may dine together.
If all these species can live together in peace, why, pray, can we not?!

Luscious Lavender

Last weekend was the final opportunity to enjoy the beautiful lavender in Sonoma County before the harvest.  We were told that this would take two weeks to complete!  What a beautiful day to enjoy the perfume of the lavender and the sounds of happy honey bees.

I thank Gale Perry of Light Fantastic Photo Tours for organizing this delightful workshop!
